Calcium supplements lessens pregnancy risks

A pregnant mom faces several risks during pregnancy that can endanger her health and the safety of the baby inside the womb. In order to minimize the possibility of these risks to occur, precautionary measures are undertaken such as laboratory examinations, ultrasounds and 4d scans and so on. But more than these clinical measures, it is important to always stick to what is basic- that is to have a balance meal and proper nutrition. Prenatal vitamins might be recommended by your physician such as calcium supplements.

Recommended daily intake of calcium for expectant mom is 1,200 milligrams of calcium. This is the maximum amount of calcium that could be digested by the body each day. Calcium can be derived from dairy products like milk and cheese and green vegetables such as broccoli. If you think that you have insufficient calcium intake per day, you might need to visit your doctor and ask for calcium supplements prescription.

Calcium plays a major role in the development of bones and teeth. Much of the calcium stored in the body is deposited in the bones. When the calcium is lacking, the calcium needed by the baby is derived from the bones of the mother. This can create bone health risks to the expectant mom later in life.

In several separate studies that has been conducted, it validated that calcium supplementation during pregnancy can lessen health risks such as hypertension or pre-eclampsia and lead exposure, therefore, minimizing the possibilities of pre-term labor. High levels of lead in the blood can be harmful and in fact fatal for the baby. It can cause miscarriage, low birth weight and several placental abnormalities. Calcium supplementation can lower the level of lead in the blood by 31% in reference to a study conducted by the University of Michigan.

Proper nutrition is very important during the pregnancy years and much more important when you are pregnant. Take calcium supplements daily along with balance diet and exercise and ensure the safety and good health of your baby while inside the womb.
